What was originally designed in the mid 19th century as a practical means of identifying a cigar brand, the (now not so humble) cigar ring has evolved into a symbol of luxury and sophistication.
With the rise in popularity of cigars in the mid 19th century, such that the cigarmaker’s bands design artistry was directly correlated to the craftsmanship of the actual cigar itself – so too did the materials used. Manufacturers moved from paper to more luxurious materials like gold and silver, often adorning the bands with elaborate engravings, decorative motifs, and even gemstones to elevate the band and feature the skilfulness of the jeweller.
This transformation marked the beginning of the cigar ring’s status as a fashionable accessory. As a piece of jewellery it signified wealth and taste, making it a much sought after connoisseur’s and collectors item.
Today cigar rings are celebrated not only for their historical significance, but also as pieces that reflect personal style bridging the gap between traditional cigar culture and modern elegance.
